The World's Rarest Turtle Has A Shot At Escaping Extinction - The New York Times

Six feet wide and weighing in at more than 300 pounds, that's two meters and 136 kg for the rest of the planet, Swinhoe's softshell turtle has a new lease on existence after a female of the species was discovered in Vietnam. This is cryptozoology in action, and while this turtle may not be a monster the species does have deep roots in Asian folklore, according to Rachel Nuwer. Much rarer is The Congolese Ndendecki, which Dr. Karl Shuker reckons is a veritable dinosaur turtle based on all accounts and how this beast might have mokele mbembe beat when it comes to high strangeness.
