Loren Coleman pens a tribute to a "visionary cultural anthropologist" who died in 2018. Wagner was one of Loren's professors at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale back in 1968. While researching the cultures of Papua New Guinea in the 1960s and 1970s, Wagner heard tales of a creature called the ri, which was described as having a bottom like a fish and a top like a human. In the 1980s he went on an expedition to search for these Merbeings in New Guinea, during which he got to within 50 feet of the ri. Wagner went on to chair of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Virginia where he taught for 44 years until his passing. Details of research into the ri and some murky photographs were published in
Cryptozoology, the peer reviewed journal of the now defunct International Society of Cryptozoology. (PH)
