J. Allen Hynek was small in stature but remains a towering figure in the history of ufology. Kevin Randle interviews the author of the excellent and sole Hynek biography,
The Close Encounters Man: How One Man Made the World Believe in UFOs. Randle and Mark O'Connell discuss why Mark thinks Hynek himself would not have been "on board" with the tv series
Project Blue Book, and a key misrepresentation of Hynek's motivations that soured the biographer himself towards the program. Interesting nuggets in this interview may surprise even the well-read, like the story about Jerome Clark and Jacques Vallee and Hynek's files, or the one time Hynek discounted peace officer testimony. 'Connell also makes a key observation--in retrospect seemingly so obvious--which would appear to demolish the notion that the Socorro craft was an early "lunar lander." (WM)
