He suggests that all manner of supernatural abomination with hate for humanity are attaching to us when we are at our most vulnerable--asleep--sucking us dry psychically. And while the experience of waking up more tired than we went to bed can easily be explained in terms of physical environment, Redfern's suggestion makes it less likely we will fall asleep in the first place.
