Michael Mayes provides some of the more interesting and credible recent accounts of these enigmatic animals. In
Out of the Shadows, Gerry Russell begins his review of Michael Mayes' new book,
Shadow Cats: The Black Panthers of North America by saying that although mainstream science insists there is no such animal, Mayes "gives vast information and data to the contrary." Russell concludes by saying "I was rather sceptical when I first started reading this book but I feel I am becoming a convert! Maybe black panthers do exist somewhere... Although there is a lot of data contained in this book it is still an exciting and worthwhile read." Mayes' book is also featured in the latest issue of
Grayson Quarterly, a magazine for Appalachian eastern Kentucky/West Virginia. In the article entitled
Big Black Cats, Jeremy Wells found the book to be "a compelling, confounding and comprehensive look at a phenomenon that captures the imagination and deserves more serious consideration." (PH)
