The Loch Ness Monster: A Modern History - Daily Maverick

It's not often we find an article about Nessie that's as well balanced and objective as this one. Beginning with her first sightings in the era of the epic movie release of King Kong and moving ahead to current activity spotted on the Loch, we're left a little wiser in the ways of investigation and a little less skeptical of the monster in the dark waters. But we can't give the same kudos to a recent travel article we reviewed a few weeks back, and neither can this longtime resident of Inverness: Travel writer Cameron Hewitt claims there’s no Nessie – what a cheek! Not only did Hewitt flippantly dismiss one of the most lovely bodies of water in the world, he did so while hailing from Seattle, Washington—perhaps the greyest city in the world. We'll finish off with some Loch Ness history, where Marmaduke Wetherell Makes a Film. Before he was made infamous for the hoaxed Surgeon General photograph, Weatherell was busy making documentaries. Roland Watson describes his find of a near perfect program from the film, and the people behind its production—not all of whom would have wanted to be tied to a world class hoax later. (CM)
