William, the Fairies and the Bath - Beachcombing's Bizarre History Blog

It's a delight to see Dr. Beachcombing back at his site after an extended sabbatical, and to celebrate this spate of activity we dedicate a section entirely to his craft. In this first account William Butterfield was headed for a therapeutic bath when he discovered that the Gentry also happen to enjoy dipping their toes into the cold springs of Ilkley. As for Beach's analysis, there are so many fun correspondences here that one can not help but believe the account! Beach isn't all about fairies, as he has a fondness for Victorian urban legends much like The Incognito Aristocrat. This nineteenth century trope was quite popular back in the day, aligning with fairy lore where the fey present as old women then rewarding kindness, involving many famous crowned heads in unexpected situations.
