A Mysterious Giant Fish in a Japanese Lake - Mysterious Universe

Here's a fishy pair of stories, starting at a pristine, freshwater lake high in the mountains of Japan. Formed when a landslide blocked off a mountain stream long ago, the landlocked body of water is said to be home to the Takitaro, an enormous fish that is alleged to be both hungry and dangerous to the local wildlife. (Think Muskellunge but with a bad attitude.) To date, biologists have no evidence of where the Takitaro came from or if indeed the giant fish is real, much like the creature in this next story. Secrets of a Japanese Mermaid Mummy to be Revealed by university researchers examining the foot-long relic. Purportedly caught in a fishing net in the mid 1700s, the strange creature will undergo DNA analysis, with results hopefully being released this fall. (CM)
