Dowsing is a practice of finding water, answers, or lost items by divinatory means. In light of the worsening dry conditions in California, it should come as no surprise that dowsers, aka water witches, are being called upon more frequently. Scientists claim this is a waste of time. The farmers and home owners employing them say it works. Who are you going to believe? Time to look into
The Dowsing Phenomenon: Beliefs, Biases, and Scientific Studies. Skeptics say that dowsing works the same way a Ouija board planchette moves around on the board; they call it ideomotor reponse. Or maybe it's just dumb luck. Then again, it may actually work. Interestingly, back in the 1970s, Russian geologists came up with a nifty new acronym for the practice, describing it with big words in an effort to breathe credibility into dowsing.
