Has an Old Soviet Mystery at Last Been Solved? - New Yorker

Well, that depends. For relatives of those who died in the Dyatalov Pass incident in 1959 and supporters of the numerous conspiracy theories that have clustered about it, no. But a "young prosecutor" Andrei Kuryakov, given charge of the re-opened investigation in 2019, has proposed an explanation that covers all the many and strange aspects of this tragedy. Alas, his own career has now become a victim of the case. Also with a new explanation is The Bizarre Story of A Kazakh Village Where Residents Fell Asleep For Days at a Time. Those of us who can't get a decent night's sleep still won't envy the experience of the villagers who had a tough time staying awake. "Violent hallucinations," sleepwalking, and manic sexual desire were among the ghastly manifestations of what is now thought to have been caused by industrial pollution. Another testament to the negligent folly of Homo sapiens. (LP)
