Dr. Bruce Greyson, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, has recently published an aptly named book
After. Based on what he has learned from patients since 1973 at the start of his psychiatric internship, Greyson's philosophy around death has morphed from one life then a dirt nap to a study of and fascination with the life beyond this life. As usual, discussions of the afterlife lead us to wonder
Why Some People Say They Can ‘Hear The Dead’. Dr Adam Powell, lead researcher in Durham University’s Hearing the Voice project, believes the phenomenon is related to a quality he calls Absorption. Essentially, study participants capable of fully immersing themselves mentally in an activity are more likely to experience the brief bursts of information associated with "hearing" spirits. Similar experiences are noted during the liminal states between sleep and consciousness. Only time can tell the future impact of this project's findings on the treatment of schizophrenia and our understanding of spiritualism. (CM)
