In the Coils of the Giant Anaconda - Strange Reality

Fear of the unknown is as old as time, drawing a line in the sand between the Natural and the Unnatural, with the intention of making humans feel "safe." Sad news for those seeking safety: Sometimes the strangest and most frightening beings exist as flesh and blood creatures in the natural habitat of their native homeland. This is an extensive blog post describing an expedition to 1970s Guyana to investigate reports of giant anacondas. It is also a reminder that we have only scratched the surface of The Strange in this world, and much of it has nothing to do with the paranormal. There is so much more to keep us awake at night than just The Creepiest and Most Dangerous Monsters Out There. Shadow People and Slenderman, Dog Men, and Black Eyed Kids are not more frightening than red faced pigmies leering over your sleeping body or termite mounds that double as ancient burial sites. They do however serve as boundaries between Us and Them, between the tangible and the intangible, the paranormal and the "normal." And it turns out that both sides are equally strange. (CM)
