Residents of Mullica Township, New Jersey, have over the past few months become an unwilling audience to explosive noises described as a cannon being fired. Authorities have little clue as to the source of the booms, so the mystery continues. But there is in fact a long history of such booms: What's Behind the Mysterious, Earth-Shaking Boom of the 'Seneca Guns'? This inexplicable noise has been rumbling around the North Carolina coast for more than 150 years. Scientists have looked into and dismissed seismic activity as a possible cause and are now considering atmospheric conditions. Don't expect a revelation anytime soon though. There are years of data collection that need to take place before scientists can reach any conclusions. (CM)
