Bad Juju in Pinocchioville - Herald Tribune

Commentary on the UFO times from very different viewpoints. Billy Cox ponders the fallout from a possible "uncovering" of the supposed governmental "UFO coverup" against the backdrop of The Times In Which We Live, rife with "bottomless appetites for devouring low-grade snake oil and cheap lies running at freakish levels," general distrust in government officials, and what seems like "The erosion of official cover." Billy does grant considerable time to skeptical thinker Robert Thompson's musings. There's precious little balance from the two authors of Why Do Smart People Lie about Alien Encounters? The writers display little command of the UFO subject, generalize with "an attention-hungry loner or a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic person reporting alien sightings," and focus upon the most outré claims made about "missions to protect humanity" and those ascribed to former Israeli space official Haim Eshed. David Halperin also considers Eshed's assertions plus another instant recent sensation in The UFO at 2020's End - Mystery Monoliths, an Israeli Space Scientist. Halperin finds a deeper yet uncertain meaning--"signal"--in the "noise" within the coverage of both the monoliths and Eshed's comments. (WM)
