Reports of Rising UFO Sightings are Greatly Exaggerated - Astronomy

"Move along, folks; there's nothing here (particularly) to see." Thus the tone of Eric Betz' piece, perhaps expected and certainly "safe" in such a traditional setting as Astronomy magazine. Betz correctly challenges some simplistic recent reviews of UFO sightings data. He does employ the MUFON and NUFORC databases and spoke to at least one of the "so-called UFOlogists." But Betz overplays the historically "breathless coverage from reporters" in the MainStream Media. Prior to the December 2017 revelations of a secret Pentagon UFO studies program and ultimately three F/A-18 videos, major outlets studiously avoided or "dissed" what veteran reporter Billy Cox calls "The Great Taboo." For commentary Betz enlists lovable Seth Shostak and Sarah Scoles, author of They Are Already Here: UFO Culture and Why We See Saucers. Scoles and Shostak have teamed up before, notably in a May NPR podcast this reviewer termed "predominantly ghastly, sadly predictable." And Betz grants precious little attention to those Navy/UFO encounters that gained some governmental attention/legitimacy for the subject of UAPs (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena), glossing over the truly interesting residue of cases that stubbornly resist creditable attempts at explanation.
