The Bizarre Story of the Heaven's Gate UFO Cult - Mysterious Universe

To many people, the term "UFO cult" immediately conjures the words "Heaven's Gate." Brent Swancer tells why this particular group has so shaped that association. Brent also relates the occupational hazards of ufology in UFO Researchers and Mysterious Deaths. One of the figures on Brent's list of strange passings is the recipient of A Letter to Ivan Sanderson, December 28, 1967. Keel is trying to correct a misunderstanding between Sanderson and Library of Congress employee Lynn Catoe over remarks attributed to her which put Sanderson and Keel himself in a questionable light. In commenting upon this missive and its background John Keel site manager Doug Skinner is surely correct that "Ufology in the '60s was obviously fraught with drama!" Again, the subject is what Keel says is called "mongering" in the UFO business. Keel's A Letter to Lynn Catoe, December 30, 1967 references John's "long letter to Ivan" and tries to close the spat between Ms. Catoe and Mr. Sanderson. Keel's observation about "ufologists" and counsel to "read some non-UFO books for a change" offer food for thought. (WM)
