Peter Matthiessen was a novelist, naturalist, wilderness writer, and environmental activist. His ability to seamlessly link both scientific fact and creative prose was legendary, demonstrated by his awards in both fiction and non-fiction writing. What wasn't so commonly known was the author's passion for Sasquatch, Yeti, and Wild Men. In some ways he seemed to see these legendary creatures as a means of saving the planet. In others, they were a symbol of his own insatiable desire to learn more of Nature's workings. But he was never a crackpot, handling his own disclosures with the greatest discretion. Matthiessen never had the face-to-face encounter he always desired, and his published works never directly addressed his lifelong passion. But material found after his death indicate he had been working for many years on a book that would have brought his passion to life on the page. Should it one day be published, we can only hope it will be handled with the same consummate discretion and scientific mind with which this great author approached all things. (CM)
