Yes, UFOs Exist. But They're Probably Not What You Think - Popular Science

Want to read something that might make your blood boil? Try this "mainstream media" offering and wonder what the author's grandpa, who saw a UFO once, would think of it. There's the standard arguments against the ETH behind UFOs, strained comparisons, and not a whole lot of Deep Thinking. Segue to Bill Nye's Explanation for Strange UFO Sightings which does not come to grips with the specific "facts" behind the Navy/UFO encounters, but trots out more of the same platitudes along with obvious possibilities. The video ends oddly, with Nye's emphasizing this is The Best Time To Be Alive coupled with a rather lame remark about denying Science being incompatible with solving problems. With this lead-up, it may be easy to miss the more nuanced position expressed in Rich Reynolds' One UFO Sighting/Report - Only One - Creates the UFO Reality. The linked article Wittgenstein: Reality is Shaped by the Words We Use is worth reading twice. Some of the dialogue in The New American Religion of UFOs interview reflects the importance of words shaping our perception of reality, and therefore what reality is to each of us. Diana Walsh Pasulka, author of American Cosmic: UFOs, Religion, Technology, also regards belief in UFOs in the light of the "kind of planetary crisis at the moment," and debates with interviewer Sean Illing whether proven ET reality would "upend the religious worldview." Correctly or not, some are seriously trying to understand the Strange New World that has now, just perhaps, arrived. (WM)
