We have been exposed for so long to ghost ships by way of cartoon sponges and movie pirates that we have forgotten the origins of those tales were actual experiences by actual seamen. The appearance of the ghost ship known as the Flying Dutchman was seen as an omen of sickness, stormy seas, and death, although one might argue that just being at sea in a sailing ship centuries ago was indication enough that those events were around the corner. Then there's
The Mysterious Boat at the Edge of the World. In the Sub-Antarctic, in a lagoon hidden away within a relatively small rocky area, a lifeboat was discovered in inexplicably good condition other than its markings being worn away by the elements. Questions abounded regarding how it got there, where its passengers had gone, and what its country of origin may have been, but any in depth investigation by its discoverers was hampered by leopard seals who aren't known for being forthcoming when they have a secret.
