Virgin Mary at Medjugorje, the "Supernatural," and What it Means for Ufology (Part 2) - Journal of a UFO Investigator

The relationship of UFOs to the mystical is the theme of religious scholar-ufologist David Halperin's post on the book Medjugorje and the Supernatural: Science, Mysticism, and Extraordinary Religious Experience. In this bridge to a Part 3 post, on its application to UFOs, Halperin sets forth his strong qualms with the philosophy that informs the mysticism of the Medjugorje visions. In Our Mystical Reality (and UFOs) Rich Reynolds mulls over where UFOs might fit in Teilhard de Chardin's construction of a mystical reality. And in Abraham Loeb Suggests Aliens Will Inspire Us to Return to Nature, Jason picks apart Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb's "cosmic humility/modesty" philosophy, which Jason terms "quasi-spiritual" and as moving Loeb "down the path to guru status." Loeb's referenced recent column Be Kind to Extraterrestrials interests because it forms a kind of counterpoint to a Paul Seaburn article: Scientist Warns to Beware of Capitalistic Extraterrestrials. The Loeb article could be read and compared to the detrimental-to-humans scenarios proffered by the authors Seaburn cites, as well as to help gauge whether Jason Colavito's charges are overblown.
