Miguel "Red Pill Junkie" Romero relates the more than century old tale of “Charley Victor,� a British Columbian First Nations elder, based on the book Sasquatch: Enigma Antropológico by Renzo Cantagalli (1979). Old Charley Victor supposedly encountered a wild woman/Bigfoot in a remote area of British Columbia, which placed a curse on Victor after he had accidentally killed a white boy who had apparently been in the Bigfoot's care. Oh, and the Bigfoot was able to speak intelligibly to Victor in a human dialect. This kind of "high strangeness� case, says Romero, is "the real enemy of Squatchers" who believe in flesh and blood creatures in an effort to gain "an air of respectability in the eyes of Academia and other social institutions.� Not to fast, argues Loren Coleman in Lost In Translation? The Twisted Charley Victor Tale. Romero has picked a weak case of "high strangeness,� says Coleman. What began as a Native account was translated into Canadian English, then translated into Italian and then Spanish, and finally into English again by Romero. "If one starts with messy re-tellings of a story, should we be surprised with a conclusion that there’s an underlying paranormal 'curse' occurring? Hey, 'high strangeness' exists, but so does ethnographically gathered story-telling that needs to be properly recorded. And judged in the temporal context of when it was collected.� Loren caps off his rebuttal with an examination of the notion of bad luck or death upon seeing or even studying Bigfoot. (PH)
