History's Project Blue Book - A Different Perspective

Researchers are reacting to The History Channel's new tv series Project Blue Book. Kevin Randle says: "About the only things that were accurate were the names of some of the people." Kevin then proceeds to "nitpick," in his own words, certain ahistorical elements which could have been easily avoided. "The real trouble here is a suggestion that the stories are grounded in reality," adds Kevin, who seems strangely accepting for one who'll argue a minor historical point into the ground. Of course this is entertainment, not History; forget the name of the channel that produced the series. Kevin seems okay with the fact that most viewers won't know which element they see is factual and which isn't, although he then thinks it important enough to go on at length about the 1948 Gorman "dogfight" profiled in the pilot episode. One wonders whether Kevin will continue his helpful "mythbusting" as successive installments in the series appear. Similarly, Micah Hanks' Project Blue Book: A Look at the Facts Behind History's New UFO Drama Series notes "the series blends some actual historical characters and events with a healthy dose of myth and speculation." Hanks properly notes that "the inevitable result of programming like this is that it will be perceived by some viewers as a more accurate retelling of historical events than intended." That seems to bother Hanks, too, so he "fact checks" a few more "elements" from the first episode. Hanks then suggests that a program he and Randle have just shown to be so inaccurate in detail and general "nonetheless presents some fun and entertaining food for thought." Well, maybe viewers will spend the time and energy to learn more about UFO history and will know where to look on their own. Good luck with that. To these milquetoast reviews Rich Reynolds responds Where in the Hell is the Outrage, pointing out what he sees as a "disservice" to certain individuals and the "madness" some UFO enthusiasts are displaying about what Hanks says "may be one of the better UFO-themed productions to come out in recent years." An unwittingly telling observation! (WM)
