Elixirs of Immortal Life Were a Deadly Obsession - JSTOR Daily

It's not so much that ancient Chinese elixirs granted immortality. Rather they tested the vitality of their creators who may have already been immortal, considering these deadly concoctions. If they survived, well there were the hallucinations, brain damage, and many other curiosities Amelia Soth would do well to avoid. While those Chinese chemists abandoned their pursuits, there's one thing more enduring than immortality. Cold, hard cash. Just the other day, Paul Seaburn crowed about Chinese Alchemists Successfully Turned Copper Into A Form Of Gold! It's not precisely gold, but it's close enough. If only someone would work on that "You can't take it with you" problem. (CS)
