Roswell: A Dead Horse! - UFO Conjectures

Rich Reynolds touches upon the difference between finding Roswell an interesting historical piece of ufology and a nearly all-encompassing urge to "prove" or "disprove" a case likely incapable of either outcome. At the same time, many of us have watched for decades the Roswell event being the "litmus test" adopted by many for whether a person found ufology interesting and perhaps even worthwhile. With Alien (Extraterrestrial) Communication....One More Time Rich makes an interesting point about reported ET/human cases. Thankfully, he does not list the internet as one of his "evolved" modes of communication. In Struggling to Bring Credibility to the UFO Phenomenon Rich deals with the particular problem of using ancient sources such as the Roman historian Livy and the Greek biographer Plutarch in "a valid, academic discussion going about UFOs." Bryan Sentes' comment is cogent in this regard, as is the consideration that both historian and biographer are properly regarded "with academic caution" due to their own overarching goals in writing and the nature of the sources they had at their disposal for events well before their own times. And for a head-spinning pivot, let's go to Esotericism And The Critical UFO Investigator for an entirely different perspective on credibility and UFOs. Hakan Blomqvist's article should be particularly interesting to ufologists, historians, and sociologists. (WM)
