The Big D

My house isn’t super haunted, but the occasional strange thing does happen. That, plus an interest in ghost-hunting shows, prompted my brother and I, plus one of our friends, to stage our own ghost hunt as kids. I don’t quite remember how we went about it, but we didn’t wind up getting a ton of evidence. In an effort to confirm that there was actually a ghost, we left a note on the counter in the basement that read: “Dear ghost, who are you?” We put a marker next to it to facilitate the process.

Time passed. No response. We half-forget about the note. Then, one day, I randomly happened to glance over at it, and under my pleading question was drawn a giant figure, resembling the capital letter “D”, written with the marker I had placed there.

As far as I know (I asked my parents about it at the time), no human has ever died in this house, but apparently the previous owners lost a dog. My family had also lost several cats, one of whom was named Dusty. I think my brother and I had speculated that the ghost was Dusty even before we got the response to our note. “Dog” and “Dusty” both begin with a “D”, so this was pretty spooky to us.

I do sometimes wonder, though, if some human faked it when we weren’t looking. It probably wasn’t one of my parents, because this was a single, sloppily-written letter, and I know from their tooth-fairy and Santa-Claus efforts that they would have written an entire note in flowery cursive. Plus, they knew my brother and I were scared and wouldn’t want to exacerbate that.

More likely is the friend I mentioned earlier, the one who ghost-hunted with my brother and I. He wasn’t exactly.. honest. Even as a kid I was certain he was making up/faking at least half of the ghost evidence he presented to us. He was probably doing it to scare us and I doubt he believed there was actually a ghost. He has also done other sneaky things in our house, both before and after the note thing, so it’s possible he snuck down when no one was around and wrote the “D” himself. I don’t quite remember how much time passed and how many times that friend came over between leaving the note and getting a response, nor do I remember if he knew about Dusty or the dog. All I know is that randomly scribbling on a piece of paper meant for a ghost, then lying about it and acting surprised when we showed him, is totally something he would have done.

So, was my friend tricking me? Did an animal ghost somehow pick up writing in the afterlife? Are there any other details I should include that may be relevant?
