Friends Say Former US Air Force Security Policeman Richard Barth Privately Revealed His 1964 Vandenberg AFB Encounter Long Before Telling Robert Hastings About It

In mid-October 2025, former US Air Force nuclear missile guard Richard L. Barth approached me with an account of his Unidentified Anomalous Phenomenon/Non-Human Intelligence (UAP/NHI) experience at California’s Vandenberg AFB in September 1964. Knowing that I would undoubtably ask for it, Barth at the same time provided his Department of Defense DD214 service record which confirmed that his assignment at the base began on July 1st of that year and that he had been a member of the 4392nd Combat Defense Squadron.

Barth’s Security Police unit was charged with protecting numerous missile launch facilities located outside of Vandenberg, including some devoted to testing the new Minuteman-1 ICBMs which were

As some readers will know, over the past five decades I have interviewed 169 US military veterans who were involved in nuclear weapons-related UFO incidents. Among those individuals, a handful—including Barth—described witnessing the presence of non-human entities during their own UAP encounter who temporarily incapacitated, overpowered, and abducted them.
The Abduction Incident

In the linked article above, Barth describes being on guard duty, alone, one night in September 1964, when he was approached by a human-appearing entity wearing a military uniform who suddenly began telepathically communicating with him. Barth became frightened and attempted to draw his .38 caliber service revolver, at which point his right arm became paralyzed. Apparently rendered unconscious for a time, Barth next remembers being aboard an unknown craft—as it hovered directly above a nearby missile-launch facility at low altitude—kneeling in front of four other entities who appeared to be members of the species we now refer to as Grays.

Next, after again being unconscious for a while, Barth found himself back in his guard shack, lying on the floor with his head resting in the lap of the first, human-like being he encountered, who began telepathically explaining the reason for the NHIs’ visit to the missile site.

Barth recalls being told that the Visitors were attempting to learn how our ICBM systems functioned, so that they could be disabled en masse should a nuclear war ever erupt. He was further told that multiple groups of NHIs were working together to protect the Earth from the massive destruction that would result from such a conflict. The being emphasized that they would only directly intervene in human affairs if a catastrophe seemed imminent.

Finally, just as his alien encounter was ending, Barth said that he suddenly had an intense spiritual experience—apparently implanted in his mind by the human-appearing entity—during which he felt an overwhelming love for all living creatures.

Readers’ Reactions

Not long after my article about Barth’s experience was published at this website, various persons on social media blogs began commenting on it, with more than a few wondering whether Barth had merely fabricated the story, incorporating some of the remarkable information about UAPs and NHIs that has recently come to light as a result of dramatic whistleblower testimony during multiple Congressional hearings. Among the disclosures by those former government insiders, various allegations have been made regarding the presence on Earth of multiple alien races who have repeatedly interfered with American and Russian nuclear weapons.

Supportive Statements by Others

Knowing that such doubts about Barth’s sensational claims would quickly materialize—perhaps understandably so—shortly after I took his statement, I asked Barth whether he had ever told anyone else about his abduction experience at some point during the past several decades. He responded affirmatively and provided me with the names of three individuals who he recalled speaking to about it. I quickly contacted those persons and, indeed, each confirmed that they had independently heard about Barth’s bizarre encounter long before he told me about it just a few weeks ago.

While these individuals were obviously not present during Barth’s alien abduction experience and, therefore, cannot confirm that it actually happened, their statements to me at least eliminate the possibility that he merely made-up his story in response to recent revelations about, and currently heightened public interest in, the UAP/NHI topics.

Understandably, due to the passage of time, these persons’ comments contain a few misremembered details.

One of Barth’s friends, Dr. Lani Paden, told me,

Richard shared his 1964 experience at Vandenberg AFB with me 25 to 30 years ago. At the time, I was completing my PhD in Transpersonal Psychology at age 50. It was quite poignant and, knowing Richard, I never doubted him. His telling felt rather spiritual as his recall was vivid. It was not like an ordinary memory but something that moved him deeply.

Because that conversation between Richard and myself took place many years ago, I cannot recall all of the details. I know he was up high and looking down from the [craft] he was in. The [non-human entities] seemed to study him and communicate telepathically directly into his mind.

He said he was near the missile site with bright lights covering a large area above him. It was difficult to see what was happening and he was unable to move. He described a strange looking figure coming toward him that did not [sic] look human.

Richard said he was frightened and could not understand what was happening to him. He knew he was awake but high above the ground in a dome-like place. There were other strange beings with large heads observing him. In Richard’s mind he was told they were there to study and gather information on the missile and nuclear capabilities. He was reassured that they meant him no harm and were sorry to frighten him.

Richard described how he began to feel peaceful, full of love and safe. He said after a while he was back at the guard station like nothing had happened. He knew to keep silent about his experience.

Richard, who [after he left the Air Force] was a Registered Nurse, managed the labor and delivery department at two of our local hospitals. He’s not one to embellish or make-up a story.

Another of Barth’s friends, Gerald DiBonaventura, told me,

This is what I recall from the conversation I had with Richard Barth about 20 years ago, in regard to his experience with a UFO:

At some point during Richard’s service in the USAF, he was stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base. He told me that one night, he observed a light in the dark sky that he identified as a UFO.

Though I don’t remember all of the details of the incident that he recounted, I recall him specifically reporting that he had been abducted and taken aboard the unidentified craft. While my memory of the specific details of this occurrence is no longer clear, I will say that I recall having full faith in the authenticity of his story and absolutely believed he had personally experienced this event.

At the time that Richard and I had this conversation, I had known him and regarded him as a good friend for at least several years. I have a great deal of respect for [him]. I know this information is limited but I hope it helps and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to help Richard tell his story.

The third friend of Barth, who wishes to be identified only as Jay L, told me on the telephone,

Yes, Richard told me about his UFO experience at Vandenberg many years ago, a long time before he talked to you. I recall him talking about aliens who paralyzed him and spoke to him telepathically. It’s been so long ago since he spoke about it that I don’t remember many of the details. But you can trust Richard. He’s not one to make up stories. He’s a serious guy.

As I wrote in my first article about Richard Barth’s experience, I am convinced that he did indeed interact with NHIs at Vandenberg AFB in September 1964, and these endorsements by his friends only reinforce my belief.
