Flying saucers whisked into the “doodlebug” confidence game trial under way in District Court.
     Herman A. Flader, Denver industrialist, told of the flying saucers, little men three feet tall and the powers of the magnetic force around the earth.

Flader is the complaining witness against Silas Newton and Leo GeBauer. They are accused of bilking Flader of $50,000 through the use of electric divining “doodlebugs” to locate oil.
$250,000 INVOLVED

The 68-year-old wealthy complaining witness testified Monday the figure involved in the alleged swindle was approximately $250,000.

Flader said the story of the Flying Saucers and little men was told to him by GeBauer while the two were driving to Carbon County Wyo., to look over oll sites owned by GeBauer.

According to Flader, GeBauer told of having seen a flying saucer from outer space and the bodies of little men three feet tall near the machine.
UNKNOWN METAL

GeBauer aso sald he had some gears of an unknown type of metal which came from the flying saucers, Flader said.

“GeBauer claimed the flying saucers operated on the magnetic force around the earth which was the principle that operated the doodlebugs," Flader said.

The flying saucer testimony was admitted by District Judge Frank Hickey over strong objections of Defense Attorneys Isaac and Gerald Mellman and Theodore Epstein.

300 CHECKS SUBMITTED

Dist. Atty. Bert Keating submitted approximately 300 cancelled” checks which he claimed Flader paid to GeBauer and Newton for oil lease interests and three "doodlebugs."

Keating said the checks represented $25,000 invested in the divining machines, $152,000 invested In Dove Creek, Wyo., oil fields, $47,000 in Mojave Desert fields, and $1500 In Newhall oil fields in California.
Keating asked Flader:

“Did you collect any dividends on these investments? Interest? Refunds?

“Not one penny,” was Flader's stock answer.

Asked to open one of the “doodlebugs” in the courtroom, Flader pried off the lid on a machine, withdrew a small dry cell battery, waved it at the jury and declared, "This is the joker that ..."

Keating stopped him from speaking further.

Defense attorneys will begin cross-examination of Flader at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
