There have been more than 85 theories to explain what people report seeing in the loch, including a swimming elephant from a visiting circus, but the most popular is Nessie as a plesiosaur. Trouble is, only about 20 percent of the reports mention a neck at all. So whatever Nessie is, it's clearly not one thing. On the other side of the pond, specifically in Michigan, we have the story of Hunting 19th Century Giant River Serpents from The Observer. It begins when a farmer blamed a large snake that “gathered up a porker and glided away� towards the Tittabawassee River. Seeking revenge, he sought the help of a detachment of infantrymen with over a hundred muskets and revolver. And so began "The Battle of Tittabawassee" and subsequently a horde of vacationers coming to see what all the fuss was about. (PH)
