A New Species Of Early Human? Why We Should Be Cautious About New Fossil Footprint Findings - The Conversation

When ancient footprints were discovered in Tanzania back in 1976, paleontologists reckoned the tracks belonged to a species of bear. Now paleontologists are rethinking their hypotheses, but Matthew Bennett and Sally Reynolds are urging caution for crying "hominin" in their latest submission. A darned shame since it'd be cool if someone invited Loren Coleman to the site so he could poke around while drawing parallels to cryptozoology. After all, Homo sapiens is possibly a hybrid which took the opportunity to become its own species. Skeptical? Check out Ty Burke's treatise on how Hybrid Species Like The 'Coywolf' Could Hold Clues About Human Evolutionary History. Amidst the great extinction of the anthropocene, it seems Mother Nature is hard at work keeping critters randy, and trying out novel combinations to see who could possibly fill niches held by former species.
