Russia's Lake Dwelling Serpent: The Brosnya Dragon - Phantoms and Monsters

When it comes to the unexplained, particularly that of the cryptid variety, it's likely we can all agree that Russia has more strange activity than the rest of the world. Today we're taking a look at a lake monster that may very well be Nessie's brooding cousin. The Brosnya Dragon was first reported by the media 24 years ago, although it's suspected to have been living (or at least its relatives have been living) in the Russian lake for centuries. Like most lake monsters, there are tales of ferocious behavior, but what stands out is the creature's propensity for swallowing islands whole. (Don't bother fact checking that.) Next we examine A Mysterious Menagerie of Lesser-Known Lake Monsters, starting with Selma in Norway, first spotted in the 19th century. We then move on to Canada and the monstrous secrets hidden in the depths of its freshwater lakes. The US also has its share of watery monsters, some preferring swamps and murk (how unhelpful of them) over clear water lakes. The takeaway from all these stories is that Nessie doesn't have to look very far if she ever wants to have a family reunion, and we should never go swimming again in anything without concrete sides and a plastic liner. (CM)
