Pareidolia continues to plague humanity, but it also tickles our imagination and sparks hope in discovering something novel. Since Percival Lowell, folks have been seeing things on the red planet. Sometimes projecting their beliefs upon it, and Natalie Wolchover enumerates some of the major mysteries which have proven illusory up to now. Often times humans have their best guess, for example landing spots for our robotic explorers, and need to deal with how their assumptions may have been completely wrong. Hence Jocelyne LeBlanc notes that
Gale Crater May Have Never Contained A Giant Lake in the first place. Rather another process may have created the illusion of it having been a crater, but what exactly does that convey about the potential for life in and around it? (CS)
