It seems that each unique geographic region of our planet is home to its own unique hairy hominid. Micah Hanks reports on China's version, the Yemen, indigenous to Hubei Province. Similar to Bigfoot but somewhat shorter, with distinctive longish red hair, the Yeren first began its series of appearances 1976, drawing the attention of the Chinese Academy of Science and resulting in a large research expedition the following year. Prior to this endeavor, folktales and legends existed that ensured the lines between fairy tale and reality were sufficiently blurred. By way of illustration,
The Buckwheat Beast: A Curious Legend of a Chinese “Monster was written in the 18th century, seeming to serve as both folk tale and warning regarding an enormous hairy biped that was strong enough to kill a man with one bite should the urge strike. Probably a good thing to keep in mind regardless of whether the tale is fact or fiction: Don't poke the hairy biped. (CM)
