In 1997, the Sound Surveillance System (established by the US Navy to detect activity within the Deep Sound Channel during the Cold War) detected the Bloop, a sound signature produced by something massive in the South Pacific Ocean. While its origins to date remain unknown, the official conclusion on the records is that the Bloop was produced by an enormous piece of glacier cracking and breaking off the Antarctic shelf. Or it could have been an unidentified leviathan, which is far more exciting and much, much less disturbing than news of our Arctic melting faster than ice cubes in a glass of lemonade. It's not an unreasonable possibility given how much we've yet to discover and understand about our oceans, as demonstrated by this next report:
Mysterious Echoes and Strange Lights at Sea: Bioluminescence on Radar? There are incidents on record of ships' radar detecting what appear to be fishing vessels, (albeit ones that disappear and reappear) but which in reality turn out to be great masses of bioluminescent organisms. While reports of these organisms is not uncommon, there is to date no viable explanation for the accompanying radar echoes. (CM)
