SETI — How Microbes Could Communicate With Alien Species - The Conversation

If one hopes to find life in a seemingly-infinite universe, one needs an idea about what kind of life may be the most abundant. Earth is positively lousy with microbes in such scale that, according to Predrag Slijepcevic and Nalin Chandra Wickramasinghe, they merit their own "bacteriosphere". From there, one tumbles down a rabbit hole of tiny life forms and their astounding capabilities suggesting they are part of a greater ecosystem. "Pfft, The Anomalist is off their rocker... AGAIN" I hear some grumble. "Microbes don't even have brains!" Well perhaps one should consider Catherine Offord's infographic Investigating Whether Single Cells Learn or not, but like my Magic Eight Ball says, "Reply hazy, try again". Even if microbes aren't all that smart, there's always panspermia. Which brings us to Greg Taylor's question, "Is Interstellar Object 'Oumuamua Alien Technology?" One doesn't need a Magic Eight Ball to appreciate the response being, "Outlook not so good" and we're not talking about email clients either. (CS)
