Most of our readers probably have at least a passable knowledge of the work of the late Dr. Ian Stevenson, who spent 4 decades investigating the phenomenon of past life memories exhibited in children. When Stevenson passed away in 2007, his colleague Dr. Jim Tucker at the University of VirginiaĆ¢€™s Division of Perceptual Studies stepped in and continued his research. Tucker and his team have expanded the database of case studies that includes examples from around the world, vetting each case as scientifically as possible to ensure that memories described by children are not only accurate, but could not have been learned by any other means. Of course, not all researchers are so careful with their data gathering, and some go to great lengths to discredit the findings of their colleagues. In those situations it's worth doing a little metaphoric digging to uncover the source of an investigator's funding. This Skeptiko interview with
Dr. Jeffrey Long, Near-Death Experience By the Numbers touches on this problem in the scientific community, but the main part of the interview is about the prevalence of NDEs and their impact on experiencers. (CM)
