How the Pineal Gland Became an Obsession for Both Spiritualists and Sci-Fi Writers - Salon

A pair of reports provide a metaphysical history lesson. We start with a wee little gland in the middle of our brains that reputedly links us to the Other Side and is allegedly responsible for a wide array of spiritual experiences. Or it may just help us sleep. Then check out The Victorian Women Who Pierced Glass Ceilings by Speaking to the Dead, a review of the new book Out of the Shadows: Six Visionary Victorian Women in Search of a Public Voice by Emily Midorikawa. Interestingly, it can be argued that none of the six spiritualists profiled made actual contributions to the women's movement, and in fact approached their unusual careers as a means of bill paying and attention seeking. You can't argue with the results though. (CM)
