Hypnosis has been around a good long while, but we still understand almost nothing about how or why it works. A step toward answering these questions might have recently been made, thanks to the University of Turku in Finland, which studied the brain processes of one highly-responsive individual. But while the healing power of hypnosis is often demonstrated, what about The Strange Case of Death by Hypnosis, as described by Brent Swancer. In New Jersey in 1909, a stage hypnotist found himself wowing an audience for all the wrong reasons and the tale didn't end well for either the performer or his subject. (LP)
