Interest in mediumship was high near the turn of the 20th century, but that interest was no guarantee of acceptance. Indeed, there were as many skeptics as believers, some pursuing lifelong obsessions to prove whatever conclusions they had already drawn ahead of the facts. George Valiantine came into his gift (or graft) late in life, so perhaps it's unsurprising that a lack of confidence in his own abilities led to some minor shenanigans that resulted in him being labelled a fake--most likely falsely. Life was no less complicated for
The Mysterious Medium Florence Cook and the Spirit Katie King. Cook was best known for the full bodied spirit manifestation of King, a feat which threw at least one skeptic into a rage and resulted in debunking behavior that would get anyone in modern times arrested, or at least forcefully removed from the premises. As typically happens, true mediumship could neither be proven nor disproven, leaving conclusions about Florence Cook's spiritualist abilities to the judgement of history. (CM)
