Rich Witches - Aeon

Early modern Germany appears to have been very invested in the notion that the poor should stay poor and the rich should come from old money. Failure to adhere to these concepts of normalcy brought with it accusations of witchcraft and myriad bizarre activities, all of them ending with a sizzle. Speaking of economic motivations to burn someone at the stake, prior to the 1500s, Women Used to Dominate The Beer Industry รข€“ Until the Witch Accusations Started Pouring In. Brewing up leftover grains in a cauldron was a common household task that fell to women, and since practice makes perfect, female brewers dominated the beer industry. Unfortunately their (jealous) male competitors discovered that well directed accusations of witchcraft made it a lot easier to succeed in the marketplace, and were so much more effective at increasing business than say, learning how to brew better beer. Evidently the fear of healthy competition was as strong as fear of witchcraft. (CM)
