How Science Solved The Mystery Of Feet Washing Ashore In The Pacific Northwest - National Geographic

For more than a decade mainstream media and authorities have puzzled over the severed feet washing ashore 'round the Salish Sea. Despite pranksters and psychics, the answer, according to Erika Engelhaupt, lay in a few experiments involving dead pigs, ocean currents, and some of the voracious denizens of the deep. If you haven't lost your lunch yet, perhaps The Mystery Of 'Harriet Cole' will have you reaching for a bucket. Once upon a time in the 19th century some poor soul was dissected and their nervous system was placed on public display. Who was this person? Did they choose such a fate, or was she chosen by Rufus Weaver regardless of her final wishes? Take a look at the display with Jessica Leigh Hester as she recounts its history and the stories hoping to fill in the gaps around this grim display. Less gruesome, but no less perplexing, is Becky Ferreira's focus on All Kinds of Marine Animals Mysteriously Circling in Bizarre Discovery. Plenty of sea creatures have been caught swimming in circles for no apparent reason nor practical benefit. While the answer is elusive, the hypotheses are necessarily crazy with an absence of cause for the behavior. (CS)
