Nick Redfern offers his perspective on the theory that woolly mammoths may have survived well past the Jurassic era and into relatively modern times. In this and his second installment on the topic,
Creatures That May Have Lived Longer Than We Thought: The Mammoth, Part 2, he examines anecdotal evidence of encounters with the massive beasts. While some of the accounts may well have been real, and allow us to entertain the possibility of a small breeding population of mastodons, others are too embellished and fantastical to entertain in any serious way. Redfern maintains that it is the domain of any fortean to decide for themselves what does or does not smack of truth. Skepticism is after all, not only healthy, it is timeless. (CM)
