Allow us to set the scene: It's the 1890s in Cory, Indiana, and a little girl has just recovered from a deadly fever. But instead of celebrating this miraculous recovery, the community shuns her because wherever she goes, a rain of pebbles follows. Everywhere. Perhaps citizens would have regarded the child more kindly if she occasionally was hit by some of the falling rocks, but according to reports it just never happened. So why didn't someone from the scientific community step in and help this unfortunate girl?
Poltergeist Phenomena & the History of Science, Part 2 offers some insight, as presented by Dr. Andreas Sommer from the University of Cambridge. This particular episode examines poltergeist phenomena and the progression of opinion from awe to dismissal in the scientific community. The series is a refreshing change from the typical debunking mentality, and instead investigates the love/hate relationship between science and the paranormal. Apparently it's true that the more things change, the more they stay the same. (CM)
