Jung, Flying Saucers, and the Anxieties of Our Time - Psychology Today

Carl Jung's 1957 work Flying Saucers: A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Skies is thoughtfully applied to the present by Kelly Bulkeley. Bulkeley does not so much consider the physical reality of UFOs, and properly does not blame the Pandemic as the catalyst for the present acceptance of flying saucers as "Serious Business." He focuses instead upon the impression that UFO sightings have upon the general culture. 'Everything We Know about Christmas is Wrong' Says West London UFO 'Expert' Richard Lawrence. Thus MyLondon reporter Charlie Lawrence-Jones, describing the beliefs of the Executive Secretary of The Aetherius Society. Apparently Lawrence-Jones finds Lawrence's explanations and philosophy "convincing." The Aetherius Society may be a generally pleasant New Religion, but Lake Forest College's Ben Zeller ties a different sect to a wider Zeitgeist in Remember the UFO Cult? What the Heaven's Gate Suicides Say about American Culture. Zeller contends the ghastly March 1997 events drew not only upon Christian and New Age religious thinking, but were fueled by "a culture of conspiracy" that seems renascent today. (WM)
