The "Amazing Randi," as he was known professionally, didn't like being called a "debunker," but that's exactly what he was, using all methods at his disposal--including entrapment--to expose, he claimed, the "pseudoscience" of spoon bending, mind reading, fortunetelling, ghost hunting, dowsing, faith healing, and UFOs. He was one of the co-founders of CSICOP, now known as CSI, the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, which at one time was one of the most powerful "skeptical" organizations in the world, giving the word a bad name in the process. Randi was also famous for a prize he offered called
The One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge "to any person who demonstrates any psychic, supernatural, or paranormal ability under satisfactory observation." Used mainly for publicity purposes, the Challenge was set up in a way that lacked any scientific authority. But one thing is certain, Randi succeeded in being an irritant to believers—and hopes to continue to do so, even in the afterlife. As he told
