An experienced and refreshingly level-headed hiker in Utah recently came across an oddity as he travelled through a wooded area: a footprint of something with human-like toes and of a size well exceeding his own mens' size 12 foot. Was he excited? Of course. Does he think the print belongs to a Sasquatch? Maybe. Maybe not. But he'd sure like it to be a Bigfoot print, and that's a perfect lead in to our next story,
Why Bigfoot and the ‘Abominable Snowman’ Loom Large in the Human Imagination. Apparently as humans we like to keep things in neat little packages--civilized and uncivilized; superior races and inferior races (Yes, Bigfoot research was once twisted to justify racism); safe and dangerous; clean and dirty. Hairy Man folklore helps us keep those dividing lines nice and clear. Which brings up Nick Redfern's latest review,
Bigfoot and Wild Men: A New Book Reviewed. Nick has nothing but praise for
Wood Knocks: Journal of Sasquatch Research, a collection of encounter reports from around the world. Objective and thought provoking, you'll find it hard to imagine humanity's existence without also accepting the existence of something--some One--big, hairy, and as old as time. (CM)
