The Ghost Dogs of the Amazon Get a Bit Less Mysterious - The New York Times

There is a small canid creature living in the Amazon, filling its belly with fish and small animals it catches, and fruit. Not necessarily timid but certainly elusive, it's been a tricky wee beast for experts to study, and only recently have said experts felt that they know enough about the habits of this short-eared dog to take steps to protect it from deforestation, which threatens to take about a third of its habitat by 2027. And now for something considerably bigger: Sometimes a “Monster is Just a Very Large Known Animal, according to Nick Redfern. From enormous sea turtles the size of whales to giant squids giving rise to stories of the Kracken, history is full of reports of perfectly normal oversized creatures that probably had no idea why they were being shunned. Maybe it's time for a body positive movement in the natural world. Perhaps Fiona the Hippo is free to be the spokesbeastie. (CM)
