The Rice Professor Who Saw Cosmic Consciousness - The Houston Chronicle

Folks change their mind as often as they change their underpants, but the changes addressed by Jeffrey Kripal's The Flip: Epiphanies of Mind and the Future of Knowledge are tantamount to changing one's fashion statement. Clothing similes aside these changes, or flips, are precipitated by transcendent experiences which may be key to a new perspective regarding the field of consciousness according to Mark B. Ryan. For example, Greg Taylor has this harebrained scheme for Bringing the Overview Effect to the Masses, Via Virtual Reality which is crazy enough that it just might work. What's the overview effect? It's what American astronauts experienced seeing Earth from low Earth orbit and beyond for the first time, and supposedly it's almost as profound as any entheogen. But what's the point if there aren't any machine elves, angels, nor technicolor cephalopods conveying universal truths to the experiencer? While religion isn't cool on the internet, Phillip Sidney Horkey illustrates the Cosmic Spiritualism Among The Pythagoreans, Stoics, Jews, And Early Christians and how those visions and aspirations motivated humanity's attempts to establish a heaven on Earth. Maybe even in the entirety of the human-perceived realm of physical reality after Sean Martin's apprehension of The Cosmos Is Alive And Existing Through Human Consciousness which is equal parts solipsism, religion, and quantum mechanics. There is one grain of salt the size of Gibraltar: Deepak Chopra is invoked, so don't get your hopes up. (CS)
