Recent reports of large black cats in the Wisconsin area have residents wondering if an actual black panther is wandering about, either as a zoo escapee or exotic house pet gone rogue. Authorities have some theories, too as Continued Sightings of Big Black Cats Raise Questions Among Wildlife Officials. The most popular explanation among them seems to be mistaken identity i.e. witnesses have seen bears and thought they were looking at cats. (Really?) Reports seem to be picking up in southeast Wisconsin as well, as Linda Godfrey relates in New Big Cat Reports: The Black and the Tan. And across the Atlantic, Black Panther Found Prowling Roofs In French Town. An escaped and very tame "pet," the panther has been captured and placed in the care of a wildlife conservancy as its owner is sought for questioning. (CM)
