Thirty-six years after the word was coined, the editors of Merriam-Webster have put "cryptid" in the dictionary. They define it as "an animal (such as Sasquatch or the Loch Ness Monster) that has been claimed to exist but never proven to exist." Not exactly the most elegant definition, but nevermind. The word was coined in 1983 by John E. Wall of Manitoba in the
Newsletter of the (now defunct) International Society of Cryptozoology. Loren Coleman of the International Cryptozoology Museum deserves much of the credit for recognition of this word, as he has been promoting its use for years. Also worth mentioning is that Loren's blog was number one on the list of the
Top 10 Cryptozoology Blogs, News Websites & Newsletters in 2019. And don't miss the
Fourth Annual International Cryptozoology Conference, which Loren host in Portland, Maine, this weekend. (PH)
