How Sovereign Citizens Helped Swindle $1 Billion From the Government They Disavow - The New York Times

At first glance one is unsure whether this article's headline or its appearance in "The Gray Lady" is the more striking thing. But the text of Ashley Powers' article manages to surpass these momentary shocks. Powers tells a ghastly story of greed and deceit, set against the backdrop of anti-government conspiracy mania. For those of us in the UFO field who knew little about the Sean David Morton fringe of the paranormal, this is a riveting, involved, and likely unforgettable read. Morton, the Powers article says, "spent years whisking E.T.-obsessed tourists to Area 51 for $99 a pop." Also employing Area 51 to improve his celebrity, or enmeshed by forces working within or for that secretive base, was a man who is the subject of Nick Redfern's Weirdness and UFO Whistleblowers. Nick says that Boyd Bushman "revealed data that was not just controversial, but arguably beyond controversial," and Nick proceeds to demonstrate why. Grounded in a legitimate and even dazzling aviation career, Bushman made UFO claims ranging from somewhere beyond the strange to the absolutely farcical. And elements in the Bushman story, including the merchandising of conspiracy theories, resonate with the Morton mess. Nick suggests a number of possible explanations, including the rather conspiratorial, for the Bushman mystery. (WM)
